Cost Saving on Amazon WorkMail

2023年12月14日

This blog post describes how I optimize the cost spent on Amazon WorkMail for this site.

Business requirement

I use WorkMail is mainly to received Emails. In rare case, I need to reply them. So, basically, only Email receiving and sending capabilities are needed.

It should support multiple Email addresses as this is an organization level of solution setup, to support AWS Organizations multi-account structure.

There is no specific requirement regarding mailbox storage size. Amazon WorkMail includes 50 GB of mailbox storage for each user. This will satisfy requirements on mailbox storage.

Background

Previously, I mainly use dedicated users to send and to receive Emails. However, based on AWS pricing: Amazon WorkMail costs $4.00 per user per month. If I have 20 users, my monthly cost would be $80 for WorkMail.

Cost Optimization Solution

In WorkMail, create aliases under one user. This could help remain the mail receiving capability while reducing cost for WorkMail.
Also note: If a user is created after the first of a month, then the monthly fee for that mailbox will be adjusted on a pro rata basis from the first day it was active to the end of that month. If a user is terminated or deleted before the end of a month, then the monthly fee for that user will still apply through the end of the month.

Service Limitation

Mail receiving
If an Email is sent using alias as the destination, on the receiver end, i.e., on the receiver's WorkMail application, the "To" or "Cc" mail address will be marked as the receiver's Email address, rather than the alias. You will not know the original mail address that the sender used.

Mail receiving
Mail could be sent using alias. You simply need to specify the alias in the "From" field.

Quota related to alias
